There’s something special about fall crochet—the cozy rhythm of stitches, a warm drink nearby, and the soft crunch of leaves outside. This herringbone single crochet pumpkin brings all that autumn magic into your hands. The subtle diagonal texture of the herringbone stitch gives your pumpkin a beautiful, woven look that feels both classic and modern. 🍂

Whether you’re decorating your mantle, gifting a handmade touch to a friend, or just indulging in a slow afternoon project, this pattern is as comforting as your favorite sweater. 🧶

Pair it with our Candy Corn ergonomic crochet hook to make the process even smoother. It’s the perfect combination of cozy and practical, letting you focus on the joy of creating rather than battling your crochet to feel comfortable.

Instructions:

Ch your desired amount. (Note: we chained 25 and it came out to be about 7”. We recommend making your chain 7”-10” in length.)

Row 1: sc1 in the 2nd ch from your hook. Hsc until eor. Ch1. Turn.

Row 2: sc1 in the first st. Hsc until the eor. Ch1. Turn.

Repeat row 2 until you have at least 15” in length. We had a total of 34 rows for about 15”. Leave a long tail, about 2ft in length for sewing then FO. (Note: we recommend adding rows until your pumpkin is 15”-20” in length.)

Fold your panel in half so the first row and last row meet.

Sew the ends of your pumpkin together to create a cylinder. Knot the yarn ends together and weave the long yarn end around the edges. You do this so you can pull that yarn end to tighten the bottom to close it.

Tuck the shorter yarn end inside your pumpkin and fill it with polyfil.Grab the long yarn end, drape it vertically up your pumpkins side to the top. Weave this yarn through the top of the pumpkin edges like you did for the bottom.  Tighten this yarn to close the top.

Drape the yarn downward back over the yarn that was going up the pumpkin originally. Put your yarn end through the middle of the bottom of your pumpkin and pull it through the top. Pull tightly to create the ridge in the pumpkin.

Move the yarn over 2”-2.5”, drape it down the pumpkins side, put the yarn end through the bottom of the pumpkin and pull it through the top. Tighten this to create the next ridge in the pumpkin. —Repeat this step all the way around your pumpkin until you have even ridges.

Knot your yarn end to your pumpkin and tuck in the excess yarn into your pumpkin.

Glue a cinnamon stick or a small stick as a stem to complete your pumpkin.

You’re finished! Enjoy. 🎃
